Getting Fit With Gerd

For several years now I have been suffering with breathing problems and was diagnosed with possible Angina. Recently I have experienced some severe attacks which seem to mimic a heart attack but appear to stem from my stomach and which I believe to be food related. I also suffer with osteoarthritis. These problems have started to affect my work as I never know when an attack is going to happen.
This particular blog entry is about me getting my health, life and work back on track and in the process I hope my posts may be of help to others.

About a month ago I joined a new gym and attended for the first time on Wednesday 11th April.Because of my health problems mentioned in the lead post I have found it difficult to walk far, especially uphill, let alone exercise. I succeeded in completeing 18 minutes on the treadmill at level 4.4, incline, 1km distance. 30 repetitions on each of the hip abductor and adductor machines and 18 minutes on the uphill bike. Not bad I suppose. Diet is non existent at the moment due to a rather lean few months financially.

That's it i've lost the plot. Just put a slice of bread in my coffee instead of in the toaster. I really need to get my head in a good place I am functioning at 10% at the moment, not good. On a more positive note I started the gym yesterday, aches and pains today. No attack yesterday, just twinges but could be left over from the two massive attacks on Tuesday. Need some fingerless padded gloves and a back brace if I am going to do this properly. I am aiming to lose weight, tone-up and generally get some of my health back. With some help from a lovely lady called Nel who helped me to look in the right direction. I think I may have found what the problem is, GERD, interestingly there is also a mention of Beta Blockers causing some of the problems which I have been saying for years but the doctor's are reluctant to take me off of them. I still maintain I was fairly healthy until I started taking the angina medication 11 years ago, even the pharmacist has said I shouldn't be on the Beta Blockers. Anyway the purpose of this post is to keep you informed of my 'getting fit' in case anyone else finds themself with the same or similar condition. So healthy eating starts when I can do a proper shop but until then cut down, cut out and exercise.

Back at the gym today, still quite achy from Wednesday. 15 minutes on treadmill at level 4.4, incline 8, 0.8km. 50 reps on the rowing machine. Struggled with the hip abductor as it was uncomfortable to spread my legs so far apart. I managed 40 reps at 25lbs and the same on the hip adductor. I did 25 minutes on the bike at various levels then another 15 minutes on the treadmill at level 3.5, incline 8, 0.7km. I felt I had pushed myself enough for one day. Have booked an induction with a personal trainer for 23rd April. Just trying to cut down on food for the moment but spoilt it by having a latte in Costa while waiting for Mick to pick me up. There will be no gym Monday but will be back on Wednesday. Aiming for 3 times a week most weeks and writing and venue hunting on the other 4 days. I must admit, apart from the aches, I feel good for doing it. No attacks yesterday.
Starting weight 13.43 stone. 5ft 5 inches in height. I am not going to give you regular weight updates I will only post if there is a significant change.
Last night just before 9pm I had a cheese topped white bread roll with salt beef, I ate the salt beef the day before in my regular seeded bread from Aldi and was fine but last night it affected me badly. Within 10 minutes of eating it I had severe pains in my stomach, chest and under my right shoulder blade and shortness of breath. Gaviscon, GTN spray and boiled water wouldn't shift it. I felt weak and dizzy (as though I was going to pass out). The pain eased but continued to nag at my body until 1.15 am when I had another severe attack which didn't ease until 1.50am. these attacks are quiet scary as you are never quite sure if they actually are a heart attack. Please anyone reading this if you think it might be a heart attack you are experiencing, phone for an ambulance don't take chances.
I was completely exhausted from my ordeal and still am.
So far this morning I have only had water to drink as the pain is still lurking in the background. I am considering trying some porridge with a little brown sugar. I am going to use this blog as a food diary as well.
Please don't think I am wanting to bombard you with my health problems or that I am looking for sympathy because I am not, I just thought that what I am experiencing and trying may help others with the same or similar conditions/symptoms.
Anyway I am off to give the porridge a try.

Porridge seemed to be fine, but the experts say that oatmeal soaks up the stomach acid. I had chicken soup and two slices of bread for lunch, also fine. For tea I had steak and jacket potato with a knob of butter. Taken a Gaviscon because I have had a slight twinge now I wait to see whether I get another attack or not. I will not eat anything else tonight.

Tuesday 17th April
Mick is renovating the garden huts and conservatory so everything piled in the kitchen. Couldn't get to cooker or microwave to cook porridge so 25g cornflakes it is, no sugar, just enough semi-skimmed milk to cover. Lunch was a hot dog, chips and coffee in Ikea. Dinner was what was left of pasta bolognaise and orange juice.
Only one cup of coffee after that.
Few quite heavy twinges but put that down to bending over quite a lot and lifting heavy objects. Hate not being able to do simple tasks without worrying if it is going to bring on a bad attack.

Saturday 21st April
Porridge, black coffee
Mixed pasta salad, meat pie
Hot dog in white rolls with fried onions
big mistake as it happens. I felt an attack coming on, started in my stomach this time. Took all the onions out of the rolls and kept on eating. Attack came on but was only a short one. Ditched the white bread and onions and had my second hot dog sausage in a slice of my seeded bread, all fine. So no more white bread for me, definitely no more fried food.
